The HAOER co-founder and former co-chair took the spotlight in a San Jacinto College news article in August 2021.

Tonja Conerly was “equitable when equitable wasn’t cool.”

In fact, the San Jac sociology professor’s longstanding equity focus led to her recent appointment as the co-vice president of equity, diversity, and inclusivity for the Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) Executive Council Board.

Conerly has spent more than a decade invested in open educational resources (OER), leveling the playing field for students by increasing access to free and low-cost digital textbooks.

“If you look at the publisher textbook and the OER textbook, the basics are the same,” she said. “Therefore, I’m able to meet my student learning objectives with them both, so why not [use] the free one?”
